❤️Personal opinion:- The Cipla Story: A Legacy of Care by Archita Mitra is a beautiful little book that surprised me with how much history, emotion and inspiration it could hold within a comic-book format. As a reader who genuinely enjoys discovering stories behind people, organisations and their journeys, I loved the idea of seeing the story of Cipla presented in such a simple and engaging way.

The book takes us back to 1935, when Dr. Khwaja Abdul Hamied founded Cipla with a dream of making India more self-reliant in healthcare. Through the conversations between Anil Sharma, a fictional retired Cipla employee, and his grandchildren Ria and Adi, the past slowly comes alive. I really liked this storytelling style because it never feels like we are simply reading a list of dates and achievements. Instead, it feels like listening to someone lovingly share memories and important moments from a long journey.

I also love the thought behind the journey , healthcare should be accessible and not simply a privilege. The book touches upon Cipla’s efforts towards self-reliance, pharmaceutical research, respiratory care, affordable HIV/AIDS treatment and palliative care. It also shows how much determination is required to build something meaningful when the circumstances are not easy. Cipla’s work in making HIV/AIDS treatment more affordable, particularly for people in poorer countries, is one of the moments that gives the story a much deeper emotional meaning. 

I also enjoyed learning about the people and ideas behind the company. The journey from its early days to becoming a global pharmaceutical organisation is presented through colourful illustrations and straightforward conversations. The comic format makes the subject approachable for younger readers, but I honestly feel adults can enjoy it too. There is something special about learning important history without feeling like you are studying a textbook.

The illustrations by Devendra Bhutal add so much life to the story. The pages are bright, expressive and easy to follow, which makes the reading experience even more enjoyable.

The book was published by Amar Chitra Katha in January 2026 as part of Cipla’s 90-year celebration, making it a lovely way of documenting and sharing this legacy with a wider audience.

What I appreciated most is that this book is not only about medicines or business. At its heart, it is about "people, responsibility, compassion, resilience and the belief that science becomes truly meaningful when it improves lives".

For anyone who enjoys illustrated non-fiction, Indian history, inspiring real-world journeys or simply wants to read something meaningful and different, I would definitely recommend picking this one up. It is short, warm, informative and beautifully presented , the kind of book that leaves you with a little more appreciation for the stories behind the names we see around us every day.
